St. Mary's Volunteers

Earlier this year; an invitation went out to all parishioners asking if anyone would like to join our team of helpers, here at St. Mary's in a variety of roles.  Happily, several new volunteers came forward and they are now a vital part of our team.  However, due to a variety of reasons, our Rosary Room team is depleted.  We are asking if anyone would like to join us.  The duties involve being available to make and serve drinks after Sunday morning Mass.  Before taking on the role full training will be given, and any newcomers will always be with an experienced volunteer.  If you would like to volunteer, please send an email to stmaryshelpers@yahoo.com  Include your name and phone number and either Hilary or Patti will contact you to explain more about the role.  The more volunteers we have, the fewer times each person is needed.  Usually, the commitment is approximately once every 4 weeks.  Thanks in anticipation.  Hilary and Patti.

Homes for Ukraine Gathering

Join us on Saturday, February 3, at 2:00 pm at Cathedral Centre, 3 Ford Street, Salford, M3 6DP for a Homes for Ukraine gathering hosted by SJOG and CSAN.  Nearly two years since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the number of those still wishing to evacuate and find refuge in the UK continues to be high.  SJOG Homes for Ukraine is a programme run by St John of God Hospitaller Services (SJOG) in partnership with Caritas Social Action Network (CSAN).  We offer a matching pathway and training and support programme for sponsors and individuals displaced by the war in Ukraine.  We support people on their journey and provide opportunities to integrate into community life in the UK.  During this information session hosted by SJOG and CSAN, we will share with you the successes of our project in supporting over 200 Ukrainian refugees since September 2022.

We will discuss the current situation in Ukraine and why there is still a pressing need for people to come forward and host families from Ukraine.  We will talk through our matching service, who is eligible to be sponsored, and some key considerations before deciding to host.  You will find a wealth of useful information about hosting that will give you a clear understanding of what hosting is and isn't, to help you decide if it is right for you.  This is a great opportunity to learn about Ukrainian refugees in the UK and ask any questions you might have.  The meeting will last 90 minutes.

CAFOD update

A huge thank you to everyone who signed ‘Salina’s letter’ this summer.  Salina is the small-scale farmer from Bangladesh who is calling on the World Bank to protect the rights of farmers over their own seeds.  70,000 parishioners across 762 parishes in England & Wales signed the letter.  (Including 3,500 signatures from 37 churches in this diocese.) Salina said, “I am very happy to know about 70,000 signatures along with mine.”  Your support helped CAFOD to secure initial meetings with World Bank staff, who heard the message that seeds are for all.  This is a long struggle but it’s a very good start.  Thank you for adding your voice.

Message from CAFOD

We have all been shocked and saddened by the devastating conflict in Israel and the occupied Palestinian territory.  CAFOD’s local partners in Gaza and southern Israel are now actively responding and providing urgent humanitarian aid to those in need.  We have sent £100,000 to our local partner, Catholic Relief Services (CRS) who are already supporting 10,000 families with cash vouchers.  Families are using these to purchase essentials such as food and water as well as mattresses and bedding from wholesale suppliers in Gaza.  We have committed £50,000 to our local partner, Culture and Free Thought Association, who are sheltering 300 people in their centres in Gaza and are supporting them with cash assistance, food, water and offering counselling to those dealing with losing their loved ones, their homes and their livelihoods.  We have released £10,000 to our local partner Sadaka Reut, working in southern Israel with local emergency support groups providing psychological support, basic humanitarian assistance and building emotional resilience.

Sadly, staff and volunteers in our partner organisations have already lost their lives and tragically news has reached us that more local staff in Gaza have been killed.  They tell us that our support and prayers of solidarity for those putting their lives at risk to help during this crisis are needed now more than ever.  You can donate to CAFOD’s Israeli-Palestinian Crisis Appeal at cafod.org.uk/ipc or call 0303 303 3030 to support those affected and get funds to local trusted experts in Gaza and southern Israel who have been working alongside communities helping those most in need.  Your donation will help support aid workers providing urgent humanitarian aid including food, water and emergency shelter to those in need. Thank you for your prayers.

Diocesan Synod and the ‘Big Listen’

We would like to invite you to take part in our diocesan Synod.  A Synod is an important event in the life of a Diocese in which Bishop, priests and lay people come together in a spirit of prayer to discern together what God is asking of His Church and will help our calling to be Missionary Disciples.

We are inviting you to attend a meeting where some questions will be given to consider.  All answers and ideas contributed are welcome.  All parishioners are encouraged to come along.  Family, friends and neighbours are all welcome too. At each of the meetings, we will outline the synod questions and parishioners will be sat in table groups to consider their responses.  This won’t take the form of a discussion or debate, but rather quiet reflective consideration of our responses in a prayerful environment.  We will guide you through the questions and give time for all to respond.  If you would prefer to stay quiet that’s fine too.  We hope that you would like to be involved in the Synod as we welcome your views and they will be used to discern the way ahead for our diocese.

If you have any questions at all, please feel free to contact us at stmaryshorwichsynod@gmail.com

Save the Date

A day of Prayer and Reflection to prepare for Advent and Christmas will be held in the Rosary Room on Saturday 2nd December.  Sign up at the back of church.

We recently introduced a new way of donating to the Parish via a contactless card device.  This is now a permanent fixture at the back of church and will be available every day to make donations.  If you would like any assistance or more information, please speak with Fr Richard or a member of the Parish Finance Team.

This will give you instructions on how to set up a Standing Order or make a one-off donation to the Parish.

Save the Date

A day of Prayer and Reflection to prepare for Advent and Christmas will be held in the Rosary Room on Saturday 2nd December.  Details to follow.

  Parish “Donate” website function

It is now easier than ever to make a financial donation to our Parish.  If you would like to do this at home and you have access to the internet, simply visit the St Mary’s Parish website (www.stmaryshorwich.com) and click on the ‘Donate’ icon on the homepage. This will give you instructions on how to set up a Standing Order or make a one-off donation to the Parish.

Donations made to Charities by Cheque

You can make a donation to a particular charity at any time by putting it in the Parish Collection (e.g. CAFOD, Caritas Diocese of Salford etc.).  If you do this by cheque, please make it payable to: ‘St Mary’s RC Horwich’ and write the name of the charity you wish to support on the back.  Thank you.

Support the New Caritas Appeal

Child poverty in our diocese Latest figures show a staggering 302,158 children in our diocese are now in poverty, despite many living in homes where one or both parents are working.  As the cost-of-living crisis continues to deepen these appalling figures aren't just a number on a page, but real young lives that are being impacted every day. Caritas Salford, our diocesan charity supports many families across Greater Manchester and Lancashire experiencing poverty - families who despite hard work are still unable to keep a roof over their heads, feed their children three meals a day, or keep everyone safe and warm.  As demand for their services continues to increase significantly, Caritas Salford has launched a brand-new appeal to raise awareness and funds to help support more people across our diocese.    Find out more about the extent of poverty in your local community, or make a donation to help now, by visiting: https://www.caritassalford.org.uk/poverty/
